5 Off-beat things to do in Amsterdam

5 Off-beat things to do in Amsterdam

Hey Ertsy Fashionistas! The weekend that went by was spent in the city of sin – Amsterdam. It was one awesome trip, we say and highly recommend, too. The essence of life is in travelling and that’s the only lifestyle we, at Ertsy, identify ourselves with. The whole of Europe is the kind of haven each travel-soul craves, but some cities like Amsterdam will make you truly feel free in your existence. The city is beautiful with the most extensive bicycle network I’ve ever witness. Which gets me to my first recommendation – Always a rent a bike when in Amsterdam. It is cheap, it is convenient and you’ll see things you’d generally miss out on.

Well, of course, Amsterdam has the Ann-Fank House and the Van Gogh Musuem to visit and cherish but if you’ve been Europe for a while, like me, and are tired of museums, here’s a hand-picked list of five off-beat things you have to do when in Amsterdam.

1. Free Ferry!

Take the free ferry across the Ij to Amsterdam Noord and walk (or cycle) along the Buiksloterdijk and the Nieuwendammerdijk, check out the NDSM wharf or cycle up into Landelijk Noord.

2. Hop on a bike and head to the countryside outside of the city.

Rent a bike and go north to Waterland, west along Het Brettenpad all the way to Haarlem, or south to Oudekerk aan de Amstel.

3. Say hey to the kitty lover in you.

Amsterdam is full of weird and wonderful museums. The Katten Kabinet, a museum dedicated entirely to works of art that depict cats, is for those of us who can’t keep a straight face with a cat around.

4. A picnic on the quay in front of the Hermitage Museum.

So, again, no money spent on site-seeing but time on the experience. This area provides a great view up and down the Amstel River. The neighbourhood is obviously exotic for it has Amsterdam’s most beautiful green secrets: the Hortus Botanical Garden.

5. A beer on top of the world!

Climb on the top of the Nemo Science Museum, for which you don’t need a ticket and have a beer on the top of the world with the most amazing and mesmerising view to give you major life enlightenment.

So, when on your next trip to Amsterdam, have tons of fun, make most out of experiences, learn lessons on freedom and be your own desire! xx
