In an attempt to rekindle the (faux) artist in me, I have decided to dedicate this week to art. So, this article is specifically an ode to Paris, but the Paris for Art Lovers. Of course, if you’ve just decided to go around in the city, you can also check out the 5 off-beat things to do in the city, but if art if your calling, then this is the listicle for you.
This is a curated list of places that have stimulated me to feel the creativity in them, or just made me happy. There are also a few more places that I’ve heard a lot about but not been to, yet. So, I’ll be writing about them when I have had the first-hand experience. Furthermore, for the benefit of everyone, I’ve left out the most obvious choice – The Louvre Museum, because well, that in itself is an art lover fetish.
Of course, if the artist in you is in a casual mood like I am, you’d also appreciate this beautiful graffiti design, hooded sweatshirt that I am wearing. It’s super comfortable and served to be my perfect companion while I explored everything beautiful Paris has to offer. Just letting you know in case you want to check it out!
Behold, my version of Paris for Art Lovers:
1. 59 Rivoli- The Art Squat Of Paris
Image from the Wikipedia
Sticking out as a rather idiosyncratic place in the busy street, this place is an art gallery that holds (almost) the status of a museum. You can go inside and see the works of some of the city’s most celebrated artists and discover some new ones, too. It is not just a home for the visual arts but also a cultural center with weekly fests, live music concerts and more. 59 Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris is open daily from 1 pm to 8 pm, except on Mondays. The entrance is free.
2. The Streets of Montmartre
Anyone who knows about the art and history of Paris knows about the significant value this place has proposed. From the mid-19th century, this has been the hub of artists and the free-thinkers in and around the city. Maybe it was the beauty of the hill and the Sacre Coeur or the fact that it was located on the cheaper outskirts of than the city of Paris. You can see everything from the religious art to the rebellions in the graffitis in these streets. From the Moulin Rogue to the bohemian movement, everything that is regarded as an art shift in Paris has been rooted here. It is perfectly packaged for an art lover and a traveler, too. Also, the view from atop is to die for.
3. Musée d’Orsay
Image from the official website
Celebrated for its Monet collection, this museum is ‘underrated’, I’ll say for the lack of better words. It houses the largest collection of impressionist and post-Impressionist masterpieces in the world, by painters including Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin, and Van Gogh. The paintings are stunning and no reproduction can compare to the original works. Well, not empty, but it is relatively less crowded than the Louvre, so that’s also a win. Besides, it is hardly a 5-minute walk from the Eiffel tower, so you don’t have to take a special detour to make the visit.
Timings: 9.30 am to 6 pm admission with ticket (that city passes cover)
